Twickenham Guest House Overview

You know what struck me first about Twickenham Guest House? The fact that it’s tucked away on this quiet residential street in Johannesburg where you can actually hear birds singing instead of constant traffic noise. I mean, finding a genuinely peaceful spot in Joburg isn’t always easy, but this place manages it somehow. The Victorian-style house has that classic South African charm – wide verandas, high ceilings, and these gorgeous pressed-steel ceilings that they just don’t make anymore. When I walked in, there was this wonderful smell of fresh coffee and something that reminded me of my grandmother’s house, sort of homey and lived-in but impeccably clean.

The owners clearly put thought into making this feel like a proper home rather than just another four-star guesthouse. My room had this amazing antique armoire that must’ve weighed a ton, and honestly, the bed was one of those where you sink in just enough without feeling like you’re being swallowed whole. The bathroom surprised me – they’d renovated it beautifully while keeping the original character intact, which is harder than it sounds. What I really appreciated was the attention to practical details: proper reading lights (thank you!), multiple power outlets near the bed, and blackout curtains that actually worked. You’d be amazed how many places get these basics wrong.

The breakfast situation is where this place really shines, though. They serve it on the veranda overlooking this gorgeous garden that feels like a secret oasis in the middle of the city. The spread isn’t massive, but everything’s done properly – fresh fruit from local markets, eggs cooked exactly how you want them, and this incredible homemade muesli that I’m still thinking about months later. The coffee’s excellent too, which matters more than people realize when you’re starting your day. I actually ended up chatting with other guests over breakfast – something that rarely happens at bigger hotels where everyone’s rushing around. The whole vibe is relaxed but efficient; staff remember your name and preferences without being overly familiar about it. Parking‘s secure and right on the property, which takes a load off your mind if you’re driving around Johannesburg. The location works brilliantly if you need to get to Sandton or the airport – you’re close enough to everything but far enough away to feel like you’ve escaped the urban chaos. It’s the kind of place where you actually look forward to coming back at the end of the day rather than just tolerating it as somewhere to sleep.

Reviews of Twickenham Guest House

  • It's a good place and recommend to whoever will come to Johannesburg – Richard from Ghana – September 10, 2025 (7/10)

The quite nature of the place

What could be improved: Cleaning the room and the hospitality

  • A charming "Old Lady" mansion who could do with a bit more maintenance glamour – Susanne from South Africa – February 15, 2025 (7/10)

Very friendly host, great and really big room, bed is super comfy. Eating dinner one night was really tasty

What could be improved: The repetitive breakfast- same (toast) bread throughout, no cold meats or cheese to select from to mix things up a bit, coffee was not nice. I would really rather pay a bit extra for some more breakfast choices.
