I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Urban Rise Living2 on Fox Street, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The building has this modern, almost industrial vibe that feels pretty fresh for Johannesburg, and you know what? It totally works. This three-star spot sits right in the heart of the city, which means you’re walking distance from some genuinely cool stuff without dealing with the touristy chaos you get in other areas.

The thing that struck me most was how the staff actually seemed to care – I mean, not in that overly scripted way some places train their people, but like they genuinely wanted you to have a good time in their city. My room was clean and well-thought-out, with these big windows that let in tons of natural light (honestly, way better than I expected for the price point). The Wi-Fi actually worked properly, which is more important than it should be but there you have it. One small thing though – the walls are a bit thin, so if you’re a light sleeper, maybe pack some earplugs. Nothing terrible, just something to keep in mind.

What really sold me on this place was the location. Fox Street has been going through this sort of renaissance, and you can feel the energy when you walk around. There’s this great coffee shop literally two blocks away where locals actually hang out (not just tourists), and the Maboneng Precinct is close enough that you can easily explore all those galleries and markets everyone talks about. Parking was surprisingly straightforward too – they’ve got secure spots, which honestly takes a load off your mind when you’re navigating Johannesburg with a rental car. The neighborhood gets pretty quiet after dark, which some people love and others might find a bit sleepy, but I appreciated being able to get a good night’s sleep. If you’re looking for something that feels authentic without breaking the bank, and you want to be where actual city life is happening rather than stuck in some sterile hotel district, this place hits that sweet spot perfectly.
