Views from The 509 Overview

First Impressions

When I first pulled up to Views from The 509 on Fox Street, I’ll be honest — the neighborhood caught me off guard. This isn’t your typical tourist zone in Johannesburg, but that’s actually what makes it interesting. The four-star property sits in an area that’s been quietly transforming, and you can feel the creative energy buzzing around. The building itself has this modern, understated vibe that doesn’t scream for attention but definitely commands respect.

The Location Story

Fox Street is where Joburg’s creative scene is really happening right now — I mean, you’ve got art galleries, quirky cafés, and local designers setting up shop all around here. It’s not the sanitized version of the city you might expect, which honestly makes it more authentic. The hotel’s location rating of 8.3 from recent guests makes total sense once you spend a day exploring. You’re close enough to the main business district when you need to be, but far enough away to feel like you’re experiencing the real Johannesburg pulse. The neighborhood continues to evolve with new venues and cultural spaces opening regularly.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in lived up to the hotel’s name — those views are genuinely something special. You get this sweeping perspective of the city that changes throughout the day, from the morning hustle to the golden hour glow. The space itself feels contemporary without being cold, with thoughtful touches that show someone actually cared about the design process. The beds are properly comfortable (not just hotel-marketing comfortable), and the bathroom setup works well for both quick business trips and longer stays. Natural light floods the space, creating an inviting atmosphere throughout the day.

What Sets It Apart

What struck me most was how the staff seemed to genuinely know the area — not just the standard tourist recommendations, but the kind of local insights that actually matter. They pointed me toward a restaurant around the corner that I never would have found otherwise, and their suggestions for evening activities felt authentic rather than scripted. The property has this relaxed professionalism that works well, especially if you’re tired of overly formal hotel experiences that feel a bit performative. The team goes beyond typical service expectations.

Why Guests Love It

The fact that couples rate this place so highly tells you something important — it’s got that intimate, discovery-together kind of appeal rather than the big, impersonal hotel experience. You’re staying somewhere that feels connected to the city’s actual rhythm, not isolated from it. The 7.6 overall rating reflects what I experienced: it’s not trying to be everything to everyone, but what it does, it does really well. If you want to experience Johannesburg from a perspective that most visitors miss, and you appreciate staying somewhere with genuine character, this place delivers on that promise.

Johannesburg travel planning should be done early, especially during peak season when the city hosts internationally celebrated events and festivals in Newtown and other iconic cultural districts.

  • Excellent – Elia from Tanzania – October 26, 2024 (9/10)

There was no breakfast at all. As it's a fully furnished apartment, I do not even think if providing breakfast would be feasible.

What could be improved: Maybe the TV. At one point I wanted to watch some local (South African) and international matches but couldn't.

  • A wonderful stay with good views of Joburg. – Tshepo1984 from South Africa – February 11, 2024 (8/10)

A buzzing youthful place in the city with access to shops and restaurants.

What could be improved: The lack of parking. On the ad it was priced at R150 per day but when you get to the place, the parking was not available. I had to look for secure covered parking which was convenient. Outside parking for overnight use I would not recommend.
