I mean, most people think of staying right in the central business district, but this spot in the southern suburbs is actually brilliant if you want that quieter vibe while still being connected to everything.

The place has this four-star rating that feels earned rather than just slapped on for marketing purposes. When I walked into the main area, there was this immediate sense that someone actually cares about the details here – you can tell in the way the furniture is arranged, how the lighting works in the evenings, even the fact that the Wi-Fi actually works properly throughout the property (trust me, that’s not always a given). The rooms have this comfortable, lived-in elegance that doesn’t feel stuffy or overly formal. I particularly loved how quiet it gets at night – Mulbarton isn’t one of those areas where you’re dealing with constant traffic noise, and the guesthouse itself seems designed to keep things peaceful.

What really sets this place apart though is its position in Johannesburg – you’re close enough to get into the city center when you need to, but you’re also perfectly positioned for exploring the southern parts of Joburg that a lot of visitors miss. The staff genuinely knows the area, so when they recommend a restaurant or tell you the best route somewhere, they’re not just reading from a script. Parking is straightforward (which, let’s be honest, matters a lot in South Africa), and I noticed they pay attention to security without making it feel like you’re staying in a fortress. The 9.3 rating this place has makes complete sense once you’ve been there – it’s one of those spots where everything just works the way it should, without any particular fuss or drama. Plus, the breakfast situation is solid, and they’re flexible about timing, which I always appreciate when I’m trying to beat traffic or catch an early flight.

  Breakfast was fabulous, cooked to order with a super tasty fresh fruit bowl, fresh fig jam (made by our host Eddie) and fresh sourdough bread. Got us off to a great start.
  Location very convenient and villa itself was well designed and decorated (highlighting host Emma's creative flair) and exceeded our expectations in being able to both work there and spend time relaxing in its stunning grounds.
  Our hosts were both welcoming and informative and the dinner we had with them was most enjoyable.
