The property itself feels like someone took a luxury safari lodge and decided to plop it down in Gauteng. I mean that in the best way possible – there’s this sophisticated earthiness to everything, from the lobby’s warm stone features to the way they’ve landscaped the grounds with indigenous plants that actually belong here. The spa is where they really show off though. I’ve done my share of hotel spa treatments around South Africa, and the therapists here genuinely know their stuff. They use local ingredients in ways that don’t feel gimmicky, and the treatment rooms have this calming energy that makes you forget you’re basically in a Joburg suburb. The pool area becomes this little oasis where you can pretend you’re somewhere much more remote – though you’ll appreciate being only about 30 minutes from OR Tambo when it’s time to catch your flight.

I’d actually recommend staying for dinner even if you’re tempted to drive into the city.
