I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to V&S Apartment – Luxury Apartment on Surrey Avenue, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. The name sounds a bit formal, but this place is actually more like staying in a really well-appointed friend’s flat than a traditional hotel. And you know what? That’s exactly what made it work so well for my week in Randburg.

The location is pretty smart, actually. Surrey Avenue isn’t one of those crazy busy Johannesburg thoroughfares, so you’re not dealing with constant traffic noise, but you’re still close enough to everything that matters. I could walk to a decent coffee shop in the morning (there’s this little place about three blocks down that does proper cappuccinos), and getting to Sandton City or even into central Johannesburg wasn’t the nightmare I’d anticipated. The Uber drivers actually knew where to find me, which – let me tell you – doesn’t always happen in some parts of the city. What I really appreciated about this four-star setup was how they’ve managed to keep that apartment feel while still giving you proper hotel services. The kitchen was fully kitted out, which saved me a fortune on meals, and the living area had enough space that I could spread out my work stuff without feeling cramped. The WiFi was solid too – I had video calls with no drama, something that can be hit or miss in serviced apartments.

The building itself feels secure, which honestly was one of my bigger concerns before arriving. There’s proper access control and the staff actually pay attention to who’s coming and going. I mean, it’s not like staying in a fortress, but you definitely feel looked after. The apartment I stayed in was on the third floor, and the views weren’t spectacular or anything, but you get a nice sense of the neighborhood – tree-lined streets, other residential buildings, the kind of area where people actually live rather than just pass through. One thing that struck me was how quiet it gets at night. During the day there’s the usual suburban hum, but evenings are genuinely peaceful. The only real downside I found was that the elevator can be a bit temperamental – I ended up taking the stairs more often than not, but honestly, three flights isn’t exactly a mountain climb. And while the apartment was well-equipped, some of the furnishings felt a bit tired. Not shabby exactly, just… lived in. But for the price point, it’s really quite reasonable, especially when you factor in having your own space and kitchen facilities. If you’re planning a longer stay in the area, or you’re just someone who prefers apartment-style accommodation over the standard hotel room experience, this place hits a sweet spot that’s hard to find in this part of Johannesburg.

  Everything about the apartment was as advertised & the apartment was just perfect especially the view from the top floor unit I was in.
  
  What could be improved: There was only a day & half where the elevator wasn't working but that was due to a tenant's fault. Walking up to the 7th floor is no joke🥴 other than that I'd stay there again when I'm in JHB.
