You know what caught me off guard about Waterfall Cottages? The name actually makes perfect sense once you’re there – I mean, you can literally hear water cascading somewhere nearby, which is honestly pretty magical for a place right in Johannesburg. This four-star spot on Waterfall Avenue isn’t your typical city hotel, and that’s exactly why it works so well.

The cottages themselves have this cozy, almost residential feel that I wasn’t expecting. Each one’s got its own little entrance and enough space that you’re not bumping into your travel companion every five minutes – which, let’s be honest, can be a lifesaver on longer trips. The interiors strike this nice balance between modern amenities and that homey cottage vibe they’re clearly going for. I particularly loved the little kitchenettes; nothing fancy, but perfect for making morning coffee or storing leftovers from Johannesburg’s incredible restaurant scene. The beds are actually comfortable too (you’d be surprised how often that’s not a given), and the Wi-Fi was solid throughout my stay – important when you’re trying to figure out which neighborhoods to explore next.

What really sold me on this place was how it manages to feel tucked away despite being so accessible to everything Johannesburg has to offer. The staff genuinely seemed to know the area well – not just the obvious tourist spots, but the kind of local gems you stumble across when someone who actually lives there gives you directions. Parking was straightforward, which anyone who’s driven in Joburg will appreciate, and the grounds are well-maintained without feeling overly manicured. I stayed during a quieter period, so I can’t speak to how it handles busy seasons, but the overall vibe was refreshingly peaceful. The only minor thing I’d mention is that the water pressure in the shower could be a bit stronger – not a dealbreaker by any means, but worth noting if that’s something that matters to you. Honestly though, for the price point and the experience you get, Waterfall Cottages delivers on that promise of feeling like you’re staying somewhere special rather than just another hotel room. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to actually spend time at your accommodation instead of just crashing there between adventures.

  We did not order any breakfast and so we cannot comment although it would be good for the host to consider including a cost for a basic breakfast for guests in the room rate.
  
  What could be improved: Unfortunately, we had not yet bought South African sim cards and had no internet connectivity on our phones when we arrived so we spent a bit of time trying to inform the host that we had arrived at the premises.

  This property exceeded all my expectations. The room was big and spacious. The staff and owners were very friendly and accommodating. My kids had a lovely time on the trampoline and playing catch with the dog. Location was also excellent. I really have no complaints. They provided extra bedding and the amenities were well thought out. I’ll definitely be returning!

  The fully equipped guest room (more like an apartment) was absolutely beautiful! From the detail to furnishings and decorations, to the beautiful gardens, to the beautiful mountain view! This was one of the best guest rooms we have ever been to – thank you for a wonderful experience – next time we will stay longer!
