I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Waybury Cottage – a cozy home from home ! on that quiet residential street in Bryanston, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The name suggests something quaint and cottage-like, but this four-star gem actually surprised me in the best possible way. It’s tucked away on Waybury Road, which is one of those lovely tree-lined streets that makes you forget you’re still technically in the hustle of Johannesburg. You know what I mean – the kind of neighborhood where you can actually hear birds chirping instead of constant traffic.

The thing that struck me immediately was how they’ve managed to nail that “home from home” promise without falling into the trap of trying too hard. The owners clearly put thought into every detail, from the way they’ve arranged the common areas to feel genuinely welcoming, to the little touches in the rooms that actually make sense for travelers. I’m talking about things like proper bedside lighting for reading and enough outlets near the bed – small stuff that shows they’ve actually stayed in hotels themselves. The breakfast situation is particularly well done, and I appreciated that they source quite a bit locally rather than just going with whatever’s cheapest. Parking was straightforward too, which honestly can be a bit of a nightmare in some parts of Joburg.

What really sets this place apart though is the genuine warmth of the service – and I say that as someone who’s pretty cynical about hospitality marketing speak. The staff here actually seem to enjoy what they’re doing, which creates this relaxed atmosphere that’s hard to fake. Bryanston itself is perfectly positioned if you need to get around the northern suburbs, and it’s got that established residential feel without being stuffy. I found myself taking evening walks around the neighborhood, something I definitely wouldn’t do in all parts of the city. The 9.6 rating this place has earned makes complete sense once you’ve spent a night or two there – it’s one of those properties where you can tell they’re consistently getting the fundamentals right rather than relying on flashy amenities to distract from poor service. If you’re looking for something that feels more like staying with well-organized friends than checking into a generic hotel, this is definitely worth considering.

  Peace and tranquility amidst guinea fowls, hens and birds. The property had literally everything that a family can dream of in a BnB.

  We had a wonderful three night stay at Waybury Cottage. It is well equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. Even though we experienced load shedding, Shane had supplied a small gas hotplate so we were still able to cook and heat water for tea and coffee, and a rechargeable lantern for light. It made our trip feel like an adventure. The chickens and guinea fowl kept us amused too!

  The property is beautiful. Feels like you're in a country cottage. Feels like a home. Owner is very responsive and communicative. Excellent Internet. Convenient location where everything is a short drive away. Cottage feels very safe and secure. Highly, highly, highly recommend this property.
  
  What could be improved: Some minor maintenance on some aging fixtures is the only thing I can think that could make this more perfect.

  Beautiful spacious well equipped garden apartment with secure off-street parking.
  
  What could be improved: Unfortunately load-shedding (scheduled power outage) had just resumed in the area after a 10-month hiatus, and perhaps the host was caught off guard as we felt we were not at first adequately briefed on what to expect. They do have a backup system and it was fine after the first day.

  The spacious cottage was on a large property with its own entrance and was very private and safe. It felt as if we were in the country, but we were very central to everything. The cottage was comfortable and very well equipped with everything we needed: a home away from home. It exceeded our expectations. Shane was an excellent host. She was always available if needed and was very generous with treats and supplies.
  
  What could be improved: Nothing. Everything was perfect.

  The cottage is spacious and comfortable. It has a very nice covered terrace with furniture and a braai (barbeque). The kitchen is very well equipped which made it easy for us to prepare a few meals for ourselves. The cottage is a little away from the main house which meant it was private and also had its own entrance drive. It is located in a boomed area which gives additional security. There is also a laundry service available for an extra fee. Shane (the owner) was informative, helpful and flexible.
