You know what caught me off guard about WeStay Westpoint Apartments? It’s tucked right on Grayston Drive in the heart of Johannesburg’s business district, but it actually feels like a proper residential building rather than your typical tourist trap. I mean, when you’re walking up from the street level, you’d almost miss it if you weren’t looking – which is honestly kind of refreshing in an area where everything else is trying so hard to grab your attention.

The thing about staying here is that you’re basically living like a local for a few days, not just passing through. These aren’t hotel rooms – they’re actual apartments with full kitchens, separate living areas, the whole deal. I spent a good chunk of my first morning just figuring out how the coffee machine worked (there’s a trick to it, by the way), but once I got settled in, it felt more like I was crashing at a friend’s place than staying in some sterile three-star setup. The furniture’s nothing fancy, sort of that modern-but-practical vibe you see in a lot of newer Sandton developments, but everything works and the Wi-Fi is actually decent – which matters when you’re trying to get work done or stream something after a long day exploring the city.

What really sold me on this place though was the location without the tourist markup. You’re literally a few minutes’ walk from Sandton City if you need to do some serious shopping, and the Gautrain station is close enough that getting to OR Tambo doesn’t require selling your firstborn to a taxi driver. But here’s what the booking sites don’t tell you – the street can get pretty busy during rush hour, so if you’re a light sleeper, maybe pack some earplugs. The windows do a decent job blocking most of it, but you’ll still hear the occasional taxi hooting at 6 AM. On the flip side, there’s something oddly comforting about the urban hum – makes you feel connected to the pulse of the city rather than isolated in some resort bubble. The building’s got decent security (you’ll need a key card for everything), and I never felt sketchy coming back late from dinner in the area. Honestly, for the price point and the amount of space you get, it’s a solid choice if you want to experience Sandton without the inflated hotel rates – just don’t expect anyone to fold your towels into swan shapes.

  Everything one could have wanted was there. No complaints. We slept well and were comfortable
  
  What could be improved: The place is what it is and was value for money. We didn’t pay for the Ritz so there is nothing to complain. I like we had small thoughtful gestures with a small milk and small dishwashing liquid and coffee/sugar sachets-everything you could need was there. Would have like a hairdryer but I do understand that one cannot supply things which people may break.
