I’ll be honest, when I first pulled up to Westpoint Glammys Suites on Grayston Drive, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the name alone – but this three-star spot in Sandton turned out to be one of those pleasant surprises that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something the big travel sites haven’t caught onto yet.

The location is actually pretty smart if you know Sandton at all. You’re right in the thick of things without being stuck in the absolute chaos of the main business district. Grayston Drive puts you walking distance from Sandton City Mall (which, let’s face it, you’ll probably end up at anyway), but you can also easily hop over to Nelson Mandela Square when you want something a bit more upscale. The parking situation is way better than what you’d deal with closer to the financial center, and honestly, that matters more than you’d think when you’re trying to navigate Johannesburg traffic for the first time.

What struck me most about the suites – and they really are suites, not just hotel rooms with a fancy name – is how they’ve managed to feel both modern and comfortable without trying too hard. The spaces are genuinely roomy, with separate living areas that actually make sense to use. I mean, you could realistically work from the desk setup during the day and then shift over to the couch area in the evening without feeling like you’re living in a cramped box. The kitchenettes are basic but functional – perfect for storing leftovers from all the incredible South African food you’ll inevitably order too much of. The WiFi held up well even during video calls, which isn’t something I take for granted when I’m traveling. Staff-wise, the check-in was refreshingly straightforward, and the front desk folks seemed to actually know the neighborhood well enough to give useful recommendations beyond the obvious tourist spots. You know what really sold me though? The quietness. Despite being on a fairly busy street, the rooms are surprisingly well-insulated. No honking taxis at 5 AM, no construction noise bleeding through the walls – just proper rest, which is honestly all you want after a long day exploring Joburg or sitting through business meetings. It’s not luxury by any stretch, but it’s thoughtfully done in a way that makes you feel like someone actually considered what travelers need rather than just what looks good in photos.

  What could be improved: It was disgusting, there was a cockroach infestation, it was all over the fridge, going inside the fridge, around our food which we bought for 3 nights. It was all over the microwaves, in the bedrooms. We had to leave early to get another hotel because we couldn’t sleep with cockroaches crawling everywhere
