I’ll be honest, when I first pulled up to Westpoint Heart of gold on Grayston Drive, I wasn’t sure what to expect – the name had me curious, and the location in Sandton had me hopeful. What I found was this genuinely welcoming four-star place that somehow manages to feel both polished and unpretentious at the same time. You know what struck me first? The staff actually seemed happy to be there, which sounds small but makes such a difference when you’re dragging your luggage through the lobby after a long flight into OR Tambo.

The thing about staying in Sandton is that you’re right in the thick of Johannesburg’s business district, but this hotel sits just far enough from the main Sandton City chaos that you can actually get some sleep. I mean, you’re still close enough to walk to the Gautrain station when you need to get around (maybe ten minutes if you don’t mind the walk), and honestly, that connection alone makes life so much easier if you’re trying to avoid the traffic nightmare that is Jo’burg rush hour. The rooms themselves are what I’d call thoughtfully designed – not trying too hard to be trendy, but everything actually works properly. The Wi-Fi is solid, the shower has decent pressure, and they’ve got those blackout curtains that actually block out the city lights, which is more rare than it should be.

What really won me over, though, was how the place handles the little things that matter when you’re trying to figure out a new city. The concierge – and I’m talking about the day shift guy specifically – knows his stuff about getting around without falling into tourist traps. He pointed me toward some great spots in nearby Rosebank that I never would have found otherwise, and gave me the real story about which restaurants in the area are worth the money (spoiler: not all the fancy ones in the shopping centers). The breakfast situation is actually pretty decent too – they do a proper South African spread alongside the international stuff, so you can ease into local flavors or stick with what you know. I stayed there during what turned out to be a busy conference week, and even with the hotel pretty full, things ran smoothly. No long waits for elevators, no issues with housekeeping, no drama at checkout. Sometimes the best thing you can say about a place is that it just works, and this one does. With a 9.1 rating from other travelers, I’m clearly not the only one who thinks they’re doing something right here.
