I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Winchester Lodge on Magaliesberg Road, I wasn’t expecting much from this three-star spot in Winchester Hills. But you know what? Sometimes the places that don’t try too hard to impress end up being exactly what you need.

The thing about this area of Johannesburg is that it’s properly residential, which means you’re staying where actual people live rather than in some sterile hotel district. Winchester Hills has this quiet, almost suburban feel that’s refreshing after dealing with the chaos of central Joburg. The lodge itself sits on a street that’s lined with jacaranda trees – and if you’re there in October when they’re blooming, well, the purple carpet on the sidewalks is honestly pretty magical. I stayed there during a winter trip though, and even then the neighborhood had this settled, comfortable vibe that made me feel like I was visiting family rather than just passing through.

What struck me most was how the staff actually seemed to care about getting the details right. Check-in was smooth (no weird surprises about deposits or WiFi passwords), and they genuinely knew the area well enough to give proper directions to places. The rooms are clean and functional – I mean, it’s not fancy, but the bed was comfortable and the bathroom had decent water pressure, which honestly matters more than thread count when you’ve been traveling all day. The parking situation is straightforward too, which anyone who’s driven in Joburg will appreciate. One thing I noticed was how quiet it gets at night; you’re far enough from the main roads that you don’t have that constant traffic hum, but close enough that getting an Uber or taxi isn’t a mission. The lodge has this sort of homey feel – there’s a small garden area where you can actually sit outside without feeling like you’re on display, and the breakfast area has that local touch where they’ll chat with you about what’s worth seeing rather than just pointing you toward the tourist traps. It’s the kind of place where business travelers seem to return regularly, which always tells you something about reliability.

  What could be improved: The gate is heavy and loud. Guest open and close it the entire night. Its disturbing as it is loud and breaks your sleep.

  Everything about the place was perfect. The amazing views. I saw that they had Renovated parts of the building. Which was absolutely stunning to look and be in. I mostly enjoyed sitting and enjoying the pool side. Absolutely amazing!!!
