Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! by Marriott Johannesburg Melrose Arch Overview
I’ll be honest – when I first walked into Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! by Marriott Johannesburg Melrose Arch, I wasn’t sure what to expect from that quirky name. But you know what? It actually makes sense once you’re inside. The lobby has this bold, contemporary design with splashes of red and orange that feel energetic without being overwhelming, and there’s something genuinely cool about the whole vibe that sets it apart from your typical business hotel.
The location in Melrose Arch is what really sold me on this place. I mean, you’re basically in the heart of one of Johannesburg’s most upscale districts, surrounded by restaurants, boutiques, and that pleasant pedestrian-friendly atmosphere that’s honestly rare to find in Joburg. You can actually walk around here at night – something locals will tell you isn’t always a given in the city. The hotel sits right on Whitely Street, and I loved being able to stroll over to places like Licorish Bistro or grab coffee at one of the nearby cafés without worrying about parking or calling an Uber for a five-minute trip. Speaking of parking, they’ve got secure underground parking, which is absolutely essential if you’re driving in the city.
What impressed me most about this four-star property was how they’ve managed to feel both polished and relaxed. The rooms are spacious with floor-to-ceiling windows that flood everything with natural light, and the beds are honestly some of the most comfortable I’ve slept in – those crisp white linens and plump pillows had me sleeping way past my usual wake-up time. The air conditioning works like a dream too, which you’ll appreciate during Joburg’s hot summer months. I stayed on the sixth floor and had this fantastic view over the Melrose Arch piazza, where you can watch the daily rhythm of people heading to work or meeting friends for lunch. The only minor thing I’d mention is that weekend evenings can get a bit lively with sounds from the restaurants and bars below, but honestly, it just adds to the urban energy – and the windows do a decent job of muffling things if you need quiet.
The hotel restaurant serves solid contemporary cuisine, though I found myself eating out most nights simply because there are so many great options within walking distance. The gym is well-equipped and rarely crowded when I used it in the early mornings, and the business center came in handy when I needed to print boarding passes. Check-in was smooth, and the staff genuinely seemed to know the area well – they gave me some great recommendations for local spots that weren’t just the obvious tourist places. It’s the kind of hotel that works whether you’re here for business meetings in Sandton (just a quick drive away) or exploring Johannesburg’s cultural side, with easy access to areas like Rosebank and the city center.

Reviews of Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! by Marriott Johannesburg Melrose Arch
Wonderful – Alison from Australia – September 16, 2025 (9/10)
The staff were the best hotel staff I've hadl in a very long time. So helpful!
What could be improved: The design of the room with the open shower. Whoever approved the design need to get their head checked. Put a door across the shower. This isn't a strip club.Wonderful – Aleksey from Russia – August 25, 2025 (9/10)
Clean room, good staff, fantastic breakfast
What could be improved: Shower in the room . For couple ( family)!can be ok. For friends not good.Could be much better – Nakaharada from Brazil – August 23, 2025 (9/10)
Brand new facilities, clean, working very well
What could be improved: Communication staff asked if I would need a shuttle from airport to Hotel, I ordered, and they have just answered after my check in.
If you need a shuttle in Jobrug (and you’ll need) DO NOT COUNT ON THE COMMUNICATION STAFF, they were cynical and ironicA will definitely rebook when next in Johannesburg – Martin from United Kingdom – August 19, 2025 (8/10)
