You know what really struck me about The Royal Guest Lodge? It’s one of those places that doesn’t try to be something it isn’t – and honestly, that’s refreshing. Tucked along Malibongwe Drive in Randburg, this three-star spot has this unpretentious charm that I actually found more appealing than some of the flashier hotels I’ve stayed at in Johannesburg.

The location is pretty smart if you think about it – you’re far enough from the chaos of the city center to actually sleep at night (trust me, the traffic noise dies down considerably here), but you can still get to Sandton or the CBD without too much hassle. I mean, Malibongwe Drive itself can get a bit congested during rush hour, but what road in Joburg doesn’t? The staff seemed genuinely helpful when I was figuring out the best routes to avoid the worst of it. There’s decent parking too, which anyone who’s driven around Johannesburg will tell you is not something to take lightly.

What I appreciated most was how the place felt lived-in rather than sterile. The rooms are clean and comfortable – not luxury by any stretch, but everything works properly and the beds are actually decent quality. The kind of place where you can spread out your stuff without feeling like you’re disturbing some perfect magazine setup, you know? I noticed they’ve clearly put effort into maintenance; little things like properly functioning shower pressure and curtains that actually block out light make a real difference when you’re trying to recover from long travel days or late nights exploring the city. The breakfast area has this relaxed morning vibe where you can take your time – none of that rushed hotel breakfast chaos. And here’s something I found oddly charming: you can hear the birds in the morning, which sounds silly but after a few days in concrete hotel towers, it’s actually really nice to wake up to something natural.

Look, this isn’t going to be anyone’s Instagram-worthy luxury escape, and the 7.3 rating probably reflects that realistic middle ground. But sometimes you just want a place that feels genuine, where the staff remembers your name after a day or two, and where you’re not paying extra for amenities you won’t use anyway. If you’re the kind of traveler who values character over flash – and appreciates being able to get a proper night’s sleep without breaking the budget – The Royal Guest Lodge hits that sweet spot pretty well.

  What could be improved: Access in and out of property. You have to call for someone to open and close.
  The heater wasn’t working. The TV not easy to operate and has no smart features eg. YouTube and Netflix.

  Great Hotel and great location. The staff was the best I have experienced during my many years of travel around the world. Will definitely use this hotel again when I travel back to Johannesburg. This place capture the essence of luxury and comfort and the warm relaxing jacuzzi was just superb.

  The hotel is very peaceful and fabulous with spectacular view from our room at night. The hotel upgraded us to bigger, comfortable and luxury suite without any extra cost to us. The room service and delicious breakfast was just a wow factor and the host was extremely amazing and friendly.

  The hotel is superb really. The location is excellent, and the staff is amazing. It was a warm welcome with snacks and drinks. Very clean and secured with quality service, just a walking distance from the medical center we were going to. Our stay was excellent..

  Our stay was exception, just WOW, a 100% definition of a 5 Star Hotel from a warm welcome by friendly staff, receptionist, and the caretaker to our scrumptious Hot Breakfast. I definitely can not get enough of this Hotel, the facility, the location and the convenience of the Shopping center within our walking distance. Definitely will come back.
