The Solo Overview

I’ll be honest – when I first walked into The Solo on Oxford Road, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like just another business hotel in Johannesburg. But you know what? This four-star place actually surprised me in the best way possible. The lobby has this clean, modern vibe that doesn’t try too hard, and the staff genuinely seemed happy to see guests walk through the door, which is rarer than you’d think in Sandton.

What really won me over was how well they understand their location. I mean, being right on Oxford Road puts you in the thick of Sandton’s business district, but they’ve managed to create this calm bubble inside. The rooms are thoughtfully designed – not flashy, just really well done. The beds are properly comfortable (I’m picky about mattresses), and honestly, the shower pressure was fantastic, which matters more than people admit when you’re dealing with long days exploring the city. The soundproofing is solid too, because trust me, Oxford Road can get pretty busy during rush hour. You’ll hear the hum of the city if you listen for it, but it won’t keep you awake.

Here’s what I really appreciated though – they get the little things right. The Wi-Fi actually works throughout the building, there’s proper workspace in the rooms if you need to catch up on emails, and the restaurant serves food that doesn’t taste like it came from a hotel kitchen. I had their breakfast a couple of times, and it’s not just the usual lukewarm buffet situation. Plus, you’re literally minutes from Sandton City if you need to grab anything, and the Gautrain station is close enough that getting to OR Tambo isn’t a nightmare. The staff also gave me solid recommendations for dinner spots in the area – not the touristy places, but where locals actually eat. That kind of local knowledge makes a real difference when you’re trying to get a feel for a city. It’s not the fanciest place you’ll ever stay, but The Solo does what it promises really well, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Travelers should plan their Johannesburg visit at least two months ahead for major events like Heritage Day and Freedom Day celebrations, ensuring the best experiences and prime access to popular districts and attractions.

  • Very Good – Perushnee from South Africa – August 23, 2025 (8/10)

  • An easy location for a few days – Harry from United Kingdom – August 21, 2025 (8/10)

The price is good, location being not too far from major facilities and shopping areas and on a main road between Sandton and Rosebank. There are also many restaurants around. The area feels safe in general.

What could be improved: The finish of the complex seems a bit coarse and the layout is a little bit strange. It's looks a bit like a student dormitory. There are windows in the bathroom and kitchen opening to the corridor which often causes smells.

  • Wonderful – Mampeoane from Lesotho – August 7, 2025 (9/10)

I loved the balcony more than anything .

What could be improved: Access to the property parking was not great. I have to hoot for the guard to come open for me every time.
